The director of «Dune» dreams of a movie without dialogues: Denis Villeneuve shares his creative plans

Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve spoke about his creative plans and shared his thoughts on filmmaking during a talk at the BFI London Film FestivalThe London Film Festival (also known as the BFI London Film Festival) is one of the leading film festivals in Europe, presented by the British Film Institute. This year it runs from October 9 to 20.

Villeneuve aims to make a feature-length film without dialog, which would rely entirely on the power of visual images.

«I love dialogues, but not always in movies,» the director said during a conversation with host Brett Goldstein. He added that dialogues are often better suited to theater or television.

Discussing his latest movie «Dune: Part Two», Villeneuve praised Zendaya’s performance. The director emphasized her ability to convey emotions without words:

«Zendeja demonstrates an incredible performance, with almost no dialog, only reactions – and we understand the tragedy».

Vilniov also spoke about the challenges of filming large-scale scenes with a large number of actors.

«I had 12-15 outstanding actors in one room, each of whom could have been the lead in their own movie, plus all the extras. Maintaining the atmosphere and the special energy that I wanted — that was the real challenge», — the director shared.

Speaking about the adaptation of «Dune», Villeneuve revealed that he focused on female characters, in particular, Béné Gesserit (by the way, this female order will be discussed in separate series). This allowed him to get closer to Frank Herbert’s original idea.

«Chani’s character became more prominent. This allowed us to move away from Paul Atride and get closer to Herbert’s idea of a cautionary tale,»,” the director explained.

Villeneuve also mentioned working on the film «Blade Runner 2049». He took on this project because Ridley Scott’s original 1982 film — is one of his favorites.

Comparing his work on low-budget and blockbuster films, Villeneuve noted that the main challenge in creating large-scale projects is endurance.

«Creating a world takes a lot of effort — you have to create everything. In such films, the most difficult thing is endurance. “Sicario“We spent 35-40 days shooting Dune, and 120 days shooting Dune,” said the director.

Denis Villeneuve also added:

«The most difficult thing about all the movies I’ve made — is that there’s always a morning when I’m not in shape. It’s like trying to play an instrument when it’s out of tune. Cinema is an act of presence, I have to be there one hundred percent. A day like that is the worst day of my life».

As a reminder, Denis Villeneuve has started working on the third part of «Dune». Director confirmed, who is already working on a script for a new movie.
