Director Chad Stahelski shared the details of his upcoming film «Highlander» starring Henry Cavill.
According to the director, the plot of the new version of «Highlander» will take place «within the current New York and Hong Kong» and will be «a somewhat romantic story» — but not the way we might have imagined it.
«We’re moving the action from the early 1500s in the highlands to today’s New York and Hong Kong, and we’re seeing how that goes. There are great opportunities for action and there’s a chance to play a character with a love story, but it’s not what you might think,» the director told interview with The Direct.
The director went on to say that Cavill’s intense trait as a protagonist would be that he is «a martial arts veteran who has lived for over 500 years».
Stahelski’s «Highlander» is a remake of Russell Mulcahy’s 1986 British science fiction film. The original film told the story of immortal fighters, the characters of Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown, who must fight «until there is only one left» — and later became a media franchise with several more films and a TV series starring Adrian Paul.
Stahelski has previously stated that will be inspired by John Wick movies in the remake for vivid fight scenes, while Cavill himself claimed that people will be «satisfied with the scenario».
Filming is expected to start by spring 2025. Previously, there were rumors that the production had to be postponed because Stahelski involved in the reshoots «Ballerinas». Cavill at this time quickly subscribed to «Voltron»but, given the director’s words about the imminent start of filming, the actor’s new project will not interfere with «Highlander».
«Highlander» does not yet have an official release date, but it is expected to debut in theaters in 2026.
