The killer was on Google Maps when he put the body in the trunk — the photo became evidence

A Google Maps street view photo helped investigate a murder case. It showed a man loading a large bag into the trunk.

The criminal case started in November 2023, when a relative reported the disappearance of a Cuban citizen who lived in Spain, in the northern municipality of Soria. He went there to find a woman who was considered his cohabitant.

The Cuban’s relative told the police that he started suspecting something after receiving a series of text messages from the man’s phone. The missing person supposedly wrote that he met another woman, was leaving Spain, and was going to ditch his phone. This made the complainant suspect that the messages were not sent by the missing person but by someone else—prompting him to contact the police.

The investigation soon revealed the Cuban’s former partner and another man she was believed to be seeing. Police arrested both and charged them with involvement in the death and disappearance of the Cuban citizen. A few weeks later, a torso likely belonging to the missing person was found in a cemetery in a neighboring village.

“One of the clues that investigators used to crack the case, although not decisive, were images found during the exploration of the mapping program,” according to the police statement.

The police declined to provide more detailed information as the investigation continues. However, law enforcement emphasized the role that Google Maps played in obtaining images potentially linked to the murder. The photos helped identify the vehicle likely used in committing the crime.
