The upcoming Harry Potter series has been shrouded in secrecy for a long time, but now the head of Warner Bros. has shared some interesting information.
In a speech at Mipcom in Cannes (via Variety) Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. TV Group Channing Dungey said that the «team of writers is already in place, while auditions are currently underway across the UK and Ireland».
Dungy added that working with the Harry Potter universe has been an incredible dream of his» and that, as a huge fan of the books, he sees this as an opportunity to explore J.K. Rowling’s texts in «more depth than a two-hour movie could do».
«This is the reason why we embarked on this journey».
Interestingly, Dungy’s words seem to contradict a statement by one of the series’ writers, Andy Greenwald, who admitted that he had not finished all the books in the series and doubts the feasibility of an accurate adaptation of Rowling’s works.
«If something is advertised as an absolutely accurate adaptation, I probably won’t enjoy it because I haven’t read all the books. I read them to my eldest daughter until she learned to read by herself, and then she beat me to it».
Currently, the «Harry Potter» series doesn’t even have an official title — HBO announced its order in April of 2013, and in the summer confirmed that Francesca Gardiner («The Heirs») would be the showrunner, while Mark Mylod («Game of Thrones») and J.K. Rowling will serve as executive producers.
The casting call for the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione was open to actors who must be 9-11 years old in April 2025 and must be residents of the UK or Ireland.
The series, which has been called «a true adaptation» of one of the most successful franchises, is expected to debut on HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery Max streaming service in 2026.
