«A week for a shot»: Denis Villeneuve tells us how they shot worm riding for «Dune 2»

Director Denis Villeneuve spoke about filming the worm scenes in «Dune: Part Two». They took a lot of time and were handled by a separate film crew.

In a conversation with «Ted Lasso» star Brett Goldstein, who generated a lot of funny moments during the hour-long conversation, Villeneuve spoke about the epic scene of riding a sandworm. Earlier, the director said that it took 44 days to shoot, and a separate team called «worm block» was needed.

«I realized how I wanted to approach it, I didn’t want to compromise. The most important thing with visual effects is how are you going to shoot it? I wanted to shoot it in natural light. I realized it would take months to shoot. Every shot was very complicated. Sometimes it took half a day, sometimes a day, sometimes a week for each shot because of the complexity. If I had done it myself, I would still be shooting».

The «Worm Block» was headed by Villeneuve’s wife Tanya Lapointe, who «perfectly understood my vision». The scene with Paul riding the worm was truly epic. Not everything was always clearly visible in it, but otherwise there would probably have been less realism (if it was appropriate in the case of Shai Hulud at all).

The premiere of Villeneuve’s film Dune: Part Two» with Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides premiered in March. The film received favorable reviews and grossed $714 million.

Unfortunately, Denis Villeneuve did not say anything about «Dune 3» during the conversation. The third part of the saga will be based on the novel «Dune Messiah» by Frank Herbert, which takes place 12 years after the events of the first book. There is little information about the third movie, but Villeneuve confirmed that he is working on a scenario, а Warner’s schedule hints at a release in December 2026.
