MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Apple Mobile Processors in Q3 2024 — who shipped more chips and made more money on them

Research company Canalys has released quarterly data on the distribution of the global smartphone processor market. MediaTek, Apple, and Qualcomm are the leaders in certain categories.

In terms of the number of processors shipped, MediaTek has no close competitor. But a larger number does not necessarily mean the highest profit. Apple is the leader in this category. When it comes to growth rate, no company is catching up with Huawei’s HiSilicon. It outpaced its competitors with a 211% increase compared to the same period last year.

MediaTek shipped 119 million processors, down from the third quarter of last year. Despite launch of Dimensity 9400 in the fourth quarter, MediaTek enjoyed a huge success in the third quarter and received $26 billion. However, shipments and profits were down year-on-year Qualcomm has shown better results with the supply of fewer chips, and earned $38 billion in sales from 76 million chips. It is likely that MediaTek is sacrificing profits to get additional orders from customers.

Apple is not close to MediaTek and Qualcomm in terms of the number of processors — the company has brought 54 million chips to the market. However, it made the highest profit among all suppliers and outperformed itself by 11% compared to the same period last year. Apple does not sell its processors to others, but their use in the iPhone brings in more money. With every iPhone sold, Apple makes more money.

Huawei is limited to its home market, but has shown rapid growth there. However, this is not much in absolute terms: only 8 million HiSilicon processors and $7 billion. More detailed figures can be seen in the charts (though blurred in the Chinese open source).
