In a new interview creators of the series «The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring» confirmed the work on the script for the third season and talked about one of the story arcs.
In a conversation with the Rings and Realms YouTube channel, Patrick McKay said a few words about the future of the series: «We are writing third season and there is a lot going on in Númenor». However, most of the conversation revolved around the details of the second season and Elrond’s role in particular. Another showrunner, J.D. Payne, said:
«There are several important points that Tolkien gives us about Elrond from the First and Second Age. We know that he is the herald of Gil-galad in the Battle of the Last Alliance. We know that at some point he is going to Eregion to fight a hopelessly losing battle. Indeed, from the first moment we thought about Elrond going through these huge events and life-changing experiences».
Series co-creator Patrick McKay added that they also discussed it with actor Robert Aramayo. He is known for playing challenging roles and was surprised to be chosen for this role:
«We cast him as the most optimistic character in the series. I remember talking to him and he was asking: «Why? I don’t understand, I love «The Lord of the Rings», but why? It was like we’re going to take him [the character] on a journey to break him because it’s Elrond’s story — he’s this incredible force for good that loses everything».
Patrick McKay explained that it’s the place they’re sending the character — to in the Third Age. Of Elrond’s arch, Payne says: «The blows keep coming, they never stop».
