Disney loses at the «Oscars» for the third year in a row — the longest losing streak for the studio

Previously, it was hard to imagine «Oscar» animation nominations without Disney’s creations — it won 4 times for Best Animated Feature and was nominated 13 times (excluding Pixar projects), but this year’s main film award ceremony marked the third consecutive year that the studio was ignored.

Box office hit «Inside Out 2»which is a joint development of Disney and Pixar, was shortlisted, while the studio’s own project «Moana 2» did not find its place among the nominations. In fact, this has its advantages, since the absence of the animation giant in recent years has led to a more diverse range of contenders: in 2023, «Pinocchio» Guillermo del Toro won, in 2024 — «The Boy and the Heron» Hayao Miyazaki, and in 2025 — the cartoon «Flow», which brought the first «Oscar» to Latvia.

At the same time, last year’s profits should cover the amount from the longest series in history without new golden statuettes — Disney has become the first (and only) studio to earn more than $5 billion in 2024 with animation projects accounting for a significant portion of the total ($1.6 billion from «Thoughts Inside Out 2» and over $1 billion from «Moana 2»). The sequel «Inside Out» also held the status of the highest-grossing cartoon in history for a long time, until until it was interrupted by the Chinese «Nezha 2» which is now is approaching $2 billion at the box office.

There is an opinion that the problem is «unoriginality» projects, or rather that everything Disney has been releasing lately is sequels or spinoffs. Although, this problem is common to the industry — according to CNBC, 50-70% of the films from the six major studios (Universal, Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount, Sony and Lionsgate) that will be released in 2025 will be based on well-known franchises.

Disney demanded to make «Inside Out 2» less «gay» and fired animators before the premiere to avoid paying bonuses
