Вігго Мортенсен в ролі Арагорна у трилогії Пітера Джексона / New Line Cinema
For the upcoming movie “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” directed by Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen and Orlando Bloom have already been invited. It seems it’s time for Aragorn.
In an interview with The Playlist, “The Lord of the Rings” screenwriter Philippa Boyens said that Aragorn will play a prominent role in “The Hunt for Gollum”. She hopes for the return of Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s trilogy.
The events of “The Hunt for Gollum” unfold shortly before Frodo Baggins leaves the Shire to head to Rivendell. The new film begins with Gandalf sending Aragorn to search for Gollum. However, will Mortensen return?
“Honestly, it entirely depends on Viggo. We’re at a very early stage of collaboration. I spoke with Viggo, Andy [Serkis] spoke with him, Peter [Jackson] spoke with him, we all spoke with each other. Honestly, I can’t imagine anyone else playing Aragorn, but it will be absolutely and completely up to Viggo,” says Boyens.
Earlier, Viggo Mortensen expressed a desire to return to the role — but only if it’s feasible and appropriate considering his age. Other actors, including Elijah Wood and Sean Bean, are also not opposed to returning — but they have aged over 20 years. Philippa Boyens gives somewhat contradictory answers about their “rejuvenation”:
“I know Andy wants to work with him, but we’re not looking at using artificial intelligence — it’s about digital makeup. Whether or not Viggo will do it fully depends on how good the script turns out to be. He hasn’t seen a script yet. So, to be fair to Viggo, let’s see if we can write him a role good enough for him to want to be involved. After that, Viggo and Andy will discuss how to achieve it.”
Boyens adds that if Mortensen does not want to return, they will have to pass the role of Aragorn to another actor. This would be a controversial decision that likely would not please fans.
