The movie «A Complete Unknown» takes viewers back to the 1960s, showing a turning point in Bob Dylan’s life. His transition from folk music to an electric sound not only changed the musical landscape, but also caused a loud split among his fans. The story focuses on the key moments: the young Dylan’s journey from Minnesota to New York, his acquaintance with the musicians of Greenwich Village, and his complicated relationships with Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro) and the mysterious artist Sylvie Rousseau (Elle Fanning).
The culmination is the famous appearance at the Newport Festival, where he performed the song «Like a Rolling Stone» for the first time with electric accompaniment. This event became a symbol of change, but at the same time brought him both fame and fierce criticism.
James Mangold skillfully creates a lively and authentic atmosphere of the 1960s. Reconstructions of concert halls, coffee shops and studios capture the spirit of an era in which music was inseparable from social and political change. The costumes and sets look convincing, and even the smallest details – from posters on the walls to musical instruments – help to immerse you in the past.
The screenplay deserves praise for its courage in portraying the complex and controversial character of Dylan. The author focuses not only on the creative triumphs but also on the artist’s personal challenges, including his doubts, ambitions, and conflicts. In particular, the brilliantly written dialogues between Dylan and Baez allow us to see not only the depth of their relationship, but also their different approaches to art.
However, the script is not without its flaws. Some scenes concerning the romantic line with Sylvie Rousseau look clichéd and do not add anything to the overall picture. Also, certain plot points may seem too idealized, especially for those who are familiar with the controversial character of Bob Dylan.
Timothée Chalamet brilliantly embodies the image of Bob Dylan. Not only does he physically resemble the musician, but he also captures his mannerisms, body language, and specific vocal style. His performance of songs, such as «Blowin’ in the Wind» and «The Times They Are a-Changin’», adds authenticity, and the scenes at the concerts are literally eye-catching.
Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez demonstrates the tenderness and strength of her character, while Elle Fanning successfully portrays the mystery and vulnerability of Sylvie Rousseau. Edward Norton as Pete Seeger adds charm, while Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash creates a vivid, if cameo presence.
The soundtrack, consisting mainly of Bob Dylan songs performed by Timothy Chalamet, is one of the film’s strongest elements. The musical compositions are harmoniously woven into the narrative, emphasizing emotional moments and adding dynamics. The scene at the Newport Festival is particularly impressive, conveying not only a musical but also a social revolution.
Despite all its strengths, the movie does not avoid some problems. In particular, the script seems overly romanticized in places, which may put off those who expect more objectivity. In addition, the film focuses too much on a particular period of Dylan’s life, leaving out other important moments in his career.
