Lady Anne Fairfax — a wealthy duchess who began practicing harassment before it became mainstream. Moreover, it concerned another woman — her maid Clementine White. But unfortunately for her, she fell in love with a local stable boy, Edmund, and this love triangle led to tragic consequences.
Today, when the mansion is proudly empty, a team of bloggers, or influencers, or whatever they are, decided to visit, planning to play an ancient Japanese game «100 candles». Thanks to the stories of urban legends, these guys and girls are planning to collect a lot of views, likes, and everything else they do this kind of activity for. But the carefree content makers had no idea that their seemingly good idea would turn into a nightmare. This may come as a surprise to some, but there is no Ouija board in horror «The 100 Candles Game: The Last Possession» there is not. In fact, this is the sequel to the horror anthology «The 100 Candle Game», which was released in 2021 and has long since been successfully forgotten by everyone. Given the anthology format, it is not necessary to know what happened in the first movie. And there is no point in watching the second one.
This parade of tastelessness begins with a short exposition where the authors rely on disgust at what is happening on the screen. And then we meet a group of young idiots, the very bloggers who decided to visit a mad duchess with a broken heart. This encounter, which also takes place somewhere in the woods, is made in the style of «smartphone filming», which is why it reminded me of the forest throws of the characters in the cult horror «The Blair Witch Project». But these thoughts quickly evaporate when the characters step outside the gloomy building.
In fact, it is there that a kind of through storyline unfolds, when the unfortunate influencers set up a camera, light a hundred candles, and start telling urban tales of dubious quality. It is these stories, which will be much less than a hundred, thank God, that will form the subjects of local short films. In general, the format of an anthology is quite familiar for the horror genre; this applies to both series and feature-length films. For example, it is often used in Halloween projects. But specifically in «The Last Possession», it looks ridiculous. Each mini-plot is almost Tintin-like, short and meaningless. That’s why it’s difficult to get rid of the idea that random pieces, excerpts of various penny horror films were thrown together and passed off as something that remotely resembles a movie.
In one of the short films, a natural zombie horror movie pops up quite unexpectedly, but fans of «The Walking Dead» You don’t have to be happy, because this story is just as fleeting and meaningless as the rest of the stories. In fact, almost all of them are based on the «monster in the closet» trope to some extent, but they are hardly self-contained. Much less interesting, tense, or scary. Heck, you can’t even call them funny, so it wouldn’t be such a shame for the time spent.
But the good news is that this ridiculous outrage doesn’t last long. The net runtime, excluding the end credits, barely exceeds an hour, so if you happen to catch a screening by some miracle, it won’t last long.
The inscription on the poster «the scariest movie of the year» is unfounded and unsupported and looks more like a bad joke «The 100 Candles Game: The Last Possession» looks more like a collection of diligently completed student works that were combined in an editing room for some reason and released in this form. And it’s not very clear who this is intended for in Ukraine: apart from the fact that we have enough real horror stories, there is hardly a long line of people who are ready to be sprayed with such nonsense in the current situation.
