Due to the loss of the Leadership Matrix, the planet Cybertron suffers from a lack of life-giving Energon. Therefore, ordinary bots, who do not even have the ability to transform, work hard in the mines to extract the valuable mineral. Among these hard workers are the best friends Orion Pax and D-16. The former is a somewhat adventurous daredevil who clearly has bigger ambitions than mining. The latter gives the impression of a more balanced and less emotional young man, but this opinion is at risk of being wrong.
While the friends find themselves in various unpleasant situations due to their thirst for adventure, which leads them to meet another misfit — the unusually talkative B-127 robot, local leader Sentinel Prime is searching for the Matrix to revive Cybertron’s fertile rivers. One day, the young heroes accidentally learn about a terrible truth, but when the time finally comes to show their leadership, Orion and D-16’s views on the fight for the future of their home planet begin to differ significantly. Except for the animated format, the Transformers «Transformers» movie franchise started in 2007 and has been going on ever since, along with the adventures of superheroes and Jedi, spies of street racers has become a regular on the big screen and a conqueror of billions of dollars. Even angry reviews from film critics, mediocre audience ratings and an armful of «The Golden Raspberries» could not stop this machine and prevent Hasbro from persistently making money and promoting its toys to the masses.
When the series sucked out the last crumbs of common sense and inspiration from Michael Bay to adequately transfer the toy universe to the movie screen, it was a logical step to entrust the next films to other filmmakers. Though this move worked only so well: while the Bumblebee solo was still quite successful, last year’s «Rise of the Beasts» you can’t say that for sure. And so, amidst this constant seesaw, ranging from pleasant successes to embarrassing failures, the animated «Inception» from the director of the Oscar-winning «Toy Story 4» Josh Cooley seems like a breath of fresh air. At the very least, Cooley’s lightheartedness «Transformers» suits the animation format better than cumbersome pretentious films.
In fact, characters familiar to the viewer, in the original with the voices of Marvel stars Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson and other famous actors, it’s like a blank slate here. This means that the authors had room to develop their characters, and to upgrade them as well.
For example, it’s hard to recognize the majestic and slightly pretentious Optimus Prime we’re all used to seeing in the local rebel Orion. And Bumblebee, who is mostly responsible for humor, literally has a mouth that doesn’t close — in this regard, he’s like Deadpool, only a child’s one. Sentinel Prime also plays an important role in the plot, as in «Dark of the Moon» Bey he appears as an experienced bearded uncle. Also interesting is the development of the conflict between the two protagonists, who react to the circumstances in completely different ways.
This is the rare case when the Transformers really look like real characters, and not a useless pile of metal with big guns in front of them, merging into a single mass.
And the dynamics and combat moments of the movie are fine. The action scene in which a group of newly minted evil fighters tries to use their new powers should be especially entertaining. As it turns out, the first transformation — like the first sex — is a bit clumsy and awkward, but in the end, there is no limit to happiness.
Overall, this is a bright, dynamic, and quite exciting cartoon that refers to the origins of the irreconcilable enmity between the Autobots and Decepticons and is a great opportunity to go to the movies with the whole family. You can safely take children with you, who will definitely like it. And the older generation shouldn’t be bored, despite the twists and turns that are primarily aimed at the young adult audience.
