The most interesting new series of January 2025

If the creators of big TV show premieres had any strategy for 2025, they clearly didn’t bet on January — the first month of the year offers more intriguing continuations of various shows than new ones. As usual, we’ve got a few options for «evening viewing» from the reliable content provider Netflix, another showdown between Marvel and DC, and even a project about Pitt, but not the one you’re thinking of. What can viewers look forward to during the long January evenings — read more in the article below.

New Series

«Missing You»

Genre: detective, thriller
Premiere Date: January 1
Release: Netflix

Detective Kat Donovan discovers her «missing» fiancé on a dating app more than ten years after he disappeared. The plot of “Missing You” is based on the novel of the same name by American author Harlan Coben, who also serves as the executive producer of the project. The show will consist of just 5 episodes, all released simultaneously on Netflix on January 1.

«Lockerbie: A Search For Truth»

Genre: biographical drama
Premiere Date: January 2
Release: Peacock

In December 1988, Pan Am’s transatlantic Flight 103 from London to New York was destroyed by a bomb 38 minutes after takeoff. The explosion occurred over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members. Parts of the aircraft crashed into a residential area, resulting in the deaths of 11 more people.

The series will tell the real-life story of Jim Swire and his wife Jane, who seek justice for the victims, including their daughter Flora. The plot is based on the book «The Lockerbie Bombing: A Father’s Search for Justice» by Jim Swire and Peter Biddulph. Colin Firth stars in the leading role.

«On Call»

Genre: police procedural
Premiere Date: January 9
Release: Prime Video

The series follows experienced instructor Tracy Harmon and rookie Alex Diaz from the Long Beach, California police department as they respond to emergency calls on the streets and deal with the aftermath of losing a fellow officer.

Maybe someday they’ll make a biographical film about Brad Pitt, but for now, this is just a story about the medical workers at a Pittsburgh hospital, who face numerous challenges and heroically overcome them.

Noah Wyle, who plays the lead role, is no stranger to saving lives on screen — he previously played Dr. John Carter in the iconic «ER» (1994-2009), not to mention his appearance in a similar role in «Friends», which we’ll have reason to mention a bit later.

«American Primeval»

Genre: western
Premiere Date: January 9
Release: Netflix

This series explores the struggle for control over the American West and fierce clashes over religious and cultural differences. The show is directed by Peter Berg, whose previous project was also a Netflix miniseries «Painkiller». Tyler Kitsch, who has a fruitful collaboration with Berg, having previously starred in his feature films «Battleship» (2012) and «Lone Survivor» (2013), also stars in the series.

«A.C.A.B. La serie»

Genre: criminal thriller
Premiere Date: January 15
Release: Netflix

The official synopsis of this show goes like this: «An incident sparks an internal conflict, and members of the riot squad try to balance their tumultuous personal lives with their stressful work on the streets».

It’s worth noting that a film with the same provocative title was released in 2012, and it originated from the novel of the same name by Italian writer and journalist Carlo Bonini, which was the basis for that plot. The new, serialized version of the story can be seen on Netflix starting January 15.

«Prime Target»

Genre: thriller
Premiere Date: January 22
Release: Apple TV+Graduate student mathematician Edward Brook discovers an attempt to destroy his work on finding patterns in prime numbers, which would allow him access to all the computers in the world. A year after the death of Sherlock Holmes at the hands of his arch-enemy Moriarty, Dr. John Watson resumes his medical practice, opening «Holmes Clinic» in Pittsburgh to treat patients with strange and unusual medical problems. However, Watson soon has to confront his past when evidence emerges suggesting that Moriarty is still alive.

The series is characterized as «a medical drama with detective elements» and revolves around the legendary character from Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories. This is the second show from CBS after «Elementary» (2012-2019) that delves into the Sherlock Holmes works. Morris Chestnut plays the title role.

«Paradise»

Release: Hulu

This story is dedicated to the security service tasked with protecting a former president. The main roles are played by Sterling K. «Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man»

Genre: animated superhero action

«Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man« explores the origin story of the iconic superhero. 15-year-old Peter Parker gains superpowers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. The plot focuses on Peter’s early days as Spider-Man in an alternative reality where Norman Osborn is his mentor instead of Tony Stark.

The premiere of the first season is scheduled for January 29 on Disney+ as part of the Fifth Phase of the MCU. The local animation style pays homage to the early artistic style of the comic The Amazing Spider-Man. The plot includes a large number of characters, such as Daredevil with authentic voice-over by Charlie Cox, Otto Octavius, Doctor Strange, Rhino, Iron Man, Venom, and others. The second season is currently in development.

Continuation of Series

«The Rookie»

Genre: police procedural, crime drama
Premiere Date: January 7
Release: ABC
Season: 7

Over the previous six seasons, John Nolan, played by Nathan Fillion, has long ceased to be a rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department. However, based on the ratings, viewers seem to enjoy following the character’s career development so much that ABC keeps renewing the show and ordering new seasons. The seventh kicks off on January 7.

«Goosebumps»

Season: 2

«Harley Quinn»

Genre: animated superhero black comedy
Premiere Date: January 16
Release: Max
Season: 5

Where there’s room for Marvel Comics, there’s always space for DC rivals, too. It’s like having two pharmacies facing each other across a busy road (inspired by harsh reality).

Recall that in September, just a day apart, Disney+ and Max premiered «Agatha All Along» and «The Penguin» — projects truly from different universes. In December, the third season of «What If…?» And «Creature Commandos», which received good reviews from critics. In January, this superhero battle continues: alongside the adventures about the making of Spider-Man, there’s the fifth season of Harley Quinn’s escapades with Kaley Cuoco’s unchanged voice. To be continued.

Genre: sci-fi psychological thriller
