Harrison Ford played the leading role in the science fiction movie “Blade Runner” and returned in the 2017 sequel — however, as director Ridley Scott notes, his financiers initially doubted the choice of actor because they didn’t know “who the hell this Harrison Ford was.”
In an interview with GQ (via THR), Ridley Scott explained that at the time of filming “Blade Runner,” Harrison Ford was not well-known (at least, not as now) — despite having already played Han Solo in “Star Wars” 1977 and archaeologist Indiana Jones in the movie “Raiders of the Lost Ark”—so the director had to persuade financiers to approve him for the lead role.
“Harrison Ford was not a star at that time. He had just finished flying the ‘Millennium Falcon’ in ‘Star Wars’,” says the director. “I remember my financiers saying, ‘Who the hell is this Harrison Ford?’, and I replied: ‘You’ll see.’ Harrison became my leader.”
Previously, the director mentioned that he was forced to make movies about “normal people” because “Alien” and “Blade Runner” were not very profitable.
Despite “Blade Runner” initially being a box office flop, it has become a cult classic for many fans of science fiction cinema over the years. The plot of the film focuses on Rick Deckard (Ford), who works as a “blade runner”—a job that involves tracking down bioengineered beings known as “replicants” and “retiring” (i.e., destroying) them.
Reminder that Amazon Prime Video is currently working on a series in the Blade Runner franchise universe starring Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer in leading roles. The series’ plot tells the story of a chameleon girl named Cora, who possesses the unique ability to change her identities, and eventually, in search of a stable future for her brother, chooses her “final identity” and joins forces with a replicant named Olwen, whose life is nearing its end.
Filming concluded about two weeks ago, however, the premiere date has not yet been announced.
