Today, Apple has put an end to the 8GB MacBook. The company announced that 16 GB is the new minimum configuration for MacBook Air with M2 and M3 processors.
Introduced today MacBook Pro with M4 Pro and Max chips will also have at least 16 GB of RAM. Thus, the current Apple lineup no longer includes laptops that last year were criticized for the small amount of RAM.
At the same time, the cheapest MacBook Air still costs from $999. Previously, to get 16 GB, you had to pay $200 more. Apple took a similar step in 2016, when it set a minimum of 8 GB for the 13-inch MacBook Air and discontinued the 11-inch model with 4 GB a few months later.
Among the reasons for adding RAM to the MacBook Air are implementation of Apple Intelligence — Artificial intelligence models tend to require a lot of memory to function properly. While iPhones will still work with 8 GB, macOS software may require more resources.
