A gamer received an NVIDIA RTX 5090 instead of a 5080, but was too excited

It’s easy to imagine the emotions of a person who was able to get an NVIDIA RTX 5080 in times of shortage and saw an RTX 5090 in the box. But in the end, it was an emotional «swing».

One of the lucky few who managed to buy an RTX 5080 was surprised to see the RTX 5090 label on the card’s case. He posted on Reddit a photo of the Founders Edition video card with the RTX 5090 label, ordered directly from NVIDIA.

Геймер отримав NVIDIA RTX 5090 замість 5080, але зарано зрадів

«I ordered a 5080 and received a video card engraved with 5090. On the package it says 5080. I wonder if anyone has seen anything like this before?», — asked the owner of the video card. However, no one in the thread confirmed a similar experience — the responses were a mixture of envy, congratulations, and doubts about whether it was a fake.

After a while, the owner of the video card returned with a video showing it inside the computer to provide solid proof. Windows reported that it was an RTX 5080 card, and GPU-Z also confirmed it. What a disappointment.

Technically, there are two options: incorrect engraving or at least part of the cooling system from the RTX 5080. But the RTX 5090 Founders Edition cooler is much taller than the RTX 5080, and in general, it is about 180 g lighter than the RTX 5090. Tom’s Hardware claims that RTX 5090 FE cooling system more efficient, and if the owner of the 5080 were to get it, it would be the best option for this video card. Interestingly, there was not a complete mix-up: the customer still received the correct video card in the correct box.

This isn’t the only surprise that owners of new NVIDIA graphics cards are facing. Unfortunately, others are unpleasant: recently, at least some of the RTX 5090 crashed after installing a new driver. So far, there have been no reports of any reaction from NVIDIA or manufacturers.
