«A humiliating lesson»: Intel admits Core Ultra 200S bugs, promises fixes by December

Intel’s vice president confirms that the launch of Core Ultra 200S processors did not go as planned. The company promises to fix the performance by early December

In an interview with Hot Hardware, Robert Hallock spoke in detail about problems with Intel Core Ultra 200 processors. Toward the beginning, he said that Intel conducted an extensive study after the launch of Arrow Lake chips. The company learned that in certain configurations, performance data differed significantly from Intel’s official results and did not meet expectations, which affected sales. A fix is already being prepared.

According to Intel, under certain conditions, some systems may lose performance. The more such factors coincide, the worse the system performs. It’s not just system memory latency — although Intel notes that sometimes the latency is more than 180 nanoseconds, while a maximum of 80 ns was expected.

«I think people will be interested to hear what happened. I can’t go into all the details yet, but we found a series of multifactorial issues at the OS level, at the BIOS level, and I will say that the performance we saw in the reviews (through no fault of the reviewers) is not what we expected and planned. The launch just didn’t go as planned. It was a humbling lesson for all of us, which triggered a pretty powerful internal reaction to get to the bottom of what happened and fix it».

Certain versions of the BIOS or system settings may contribute to the performance degradation, and Intel is currently investigating the issue. Gallock did not say what exactly it is and what fixes to expect. He noted that the patches will be released by the end of this month.
