Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai says Google relies on artificial intelligence to create a quarter of its new code.
Using AI to write code is nothing new. However, the fact that an industry leader like Google is writing 25% of its new code with AI is intriguing and worrisome at the same time. Of course, artificial intelligence is not self-aware, at least not yet, and the code is controlled by developers. But this poses a real threat to novice programmers. During the announcement of the quarterly report, Sundar Pichai said:
«Today, more than a quarter of all new code at Google is created by AI and then reviewed and accepted by engineers».
Google is also updating its Internet search algorithm with AI. The AI Overviews service accumulates online results and offers a brief overview.
«In Search, our new AI features expand what people can search for and how they search for it».
While AI can help, models tend to be wrong from time to time. In addition, there is the universal problem of understanding what AI is doing and how it is doing it. This may be necessary for correcting, debugging, predicting outcomes, etc.
As for Alphabet’s financial performance — it is stable, and net profit grew by 34% over the year. The recent influx of artificial intelligence services for regular customers and a surge in YouTube advertising revenue brought the corporation a 15% increase in revenue ($88.2 billion) over the same period last year. Operating income from Google Services grew by 28%, even if the cost of maintaining AI models is taken into account. Google Cloud saw a 7.3-fold increase in operating income to $1.94 billion.
