Andrés Muschietti says that «The Flash» failed, «because viewers don’t care about the character» — but forgot another obvious fact

The director of the superhero movie “The Flash,” Andres Muschietti, believes that the film did not become popular in theaters because it failed to attract the attention of people whom Hollywood identifies as “four quadrants” — males and females over and under 25 years old.

“This is a movie that failed to attract the attention of all four sectors. When you spend $200 million, you aim to bring even your grandmother to the cinema,” said Muschietti on Radio Tu’s La Baulera del Coso (via Variety).

The director also noted that the reason is likely that The Flash is “not popular enough” compared to other DC heroes such as Superman and Batman—a conclusion Muschietti reached after “private conversations.” However, this statement can be contrasted with the eponymous series from CW featuring Grant Gustin as Barry Allen—the show was so popular that it only ended after its ninth season.

Meanwhile, the film version of The Flash starring Ezra Miller is now considered one of DC’s biggest flops: the film only grossed $271 million at the box office (with a budget of $200 million), and not even the return of Michael Keaton as Batman helped improve the situation.

Perhaps DC has similar thoughts about this, as the studio decided to return to its roots and is starting with a refreshed “Superman” in July. The plot of the movie is still unknown, however, judging from the trailer, David Corenswet’s character will have to face societal condemnation, and of course, save the world as usual for a superhero. James Gunn is directing the shooting process from his own script and previously mentioned that Superman will not be “dark and harsh” in the new version, but rather a family character who will symbolize hope for the better.
