Both AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processors were affected on the same MSI motherboard. The network suspects users are to blame, but the coincidence is alarming.
The Reddit user who reported the first instance was joined by the owner of Ryzen 7 9800X3D from the forums Quasarrzone. Both cases are united by the MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi motherboard. Its manufacturer today published a short statement:
«Recently, we received a report from a user that the AMD Ryzen™ 7 9800X3D processor on their MSI MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI motherboard was damaged. At MSI, we are fully committed to the quality of our products and have launched an investigation into this incident. In addition, we are working closely with AMD and have been in contact with GamersNexus, who is investigating this incident independently. We will continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
Earlier, MSI told Tom’s Hardware that it was only able to reproduce the problem when the processor was not properly installed in the socket. The company continues to look for other ways to reproduce the problem.
From the users’ photos, we can also conclude that the probable cause of the loss of the processors was their incorrect installation. As a result, a short circuit could have occurred. AMD Ryzen processors use a square form factor, which makes it easy to install the chip in the wrong orientation. The first user who reported the problem also recognized this possibility.
In all the photos of the affected boards, the plastic frames of the connector appear to be damaged. The protruding plastic could have prevented users from properly installing the chip. It is not known for certain whether the defect was caused by the users’ actions or whether the connectors were delivered to them in this form.
