China’s «Nezha 2» became the highest-grossing animated film in history with $1.6 billion in earnings — 99% of the box office closed «at home»

Chinese animated film «Nezha 2» outperformed the hit movie «Thoughts inside out 2» and became «the richest» cartoon in history.

According to ReutersOn Tuesday, the box office of «Nezha 2» exceeded $1.69 billion — almost the same amount as the Pixar cartoon, but the Chinese one is still in theaters. In addition to the title of the highest-grossing animated film, it was ranked eighth in the ranking of the «richest» films of all time, while experts predict that it will easily cross the $2 billion mark in the near future.

Interestingly, 99% of the box office of «Nezha 2» came from China, which relies on domestic results for its box office, as opposed to Hollywood films that choose a more global distribution strategy.

«Nezha 2» — is the sequel to the 2019 hit based on the 16th century Chinese novel «The Clothes of the Gods» and directed by self-taught animator Yang Yu (Jiaozi). The story centers on a boy with magical powers who tries to defend the fortress city of Chengtangguan.
