Director Christopher Nolan is captivated by the work of his colleague Denis Villeneuve, who this year released the second part of the “Dune” adaptation.
“He simply took the second half and made an incredible ending to the story,” says Nolan (via Variety). “It’s a miracle.”
Further, the director compared Villeneuve’s work to the first films in the “Star Wars” series:
“If for me ‘Dune’ was like ‘Star Wars’, then ‘Dune 2’ is ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, my favorite movie of the ‘Star Wars’ franchise. It’s just a wonderful expansion of everything that was presented in the first.”
Nolan highlighted the film’s detail and the feeling of complete immersion in the world.
“What really struck me was the sense of immersion in this world — the film has so many unique images, so many things you’ve never seen before, I was amazed by the details,” says the director, jokingly adding: “But, how many damn names can you give one character? Starting with Usul, Muad’Dib, Paul, Lisan al-Gaib and expecting us to keep up?”
After David Lynch adapted Frank Herbert’s “Dune” for his 1984 space opera, Villeneuve returned to the source material for his adaptation in 2021. The first “Dune” won six Oscars and together with this year’s sequel earned about $1.12 billion.
Earlier, Villeneuve stated that he would start filming the third film, based on Herbert’s 1969 novel “Dune Messiah,” by the end of 2025 or 2026, but emphasized that the film would be “a separate story.”
Meanwhile, a prequel series to Villeneuve’s “Dune” is airing on HBO and Max, detailing the mystical order of Bene Gesserit. The show has received fairly good reviews and bold comparisons to ‘Game of Thrones’ — currently, two episodes are available for viewing, with new ones released every Sunday (in Ukraine every Monday on Megogo).
