This year, Disney released two highly anticipated sequels, “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool,” which became box office hits and, along with other products, brought the studio record earnings in 2024 amounting to $5 billion ($2 billion domestic and $3 billion international), reports Deadline.
Disney is the first and only studio to hit this milestone this year. Although such achievements are not new for the company (since 2010, Disney has earned over $5 billion at least 6 times), these earnings are a first since the pandemic era.
Of course, the undeniable hit for Disney this year was the animated film “Inside Out 2,” which became the richest film of 2024 and the wealthiest animated film overall with a box office of $1.699 billion. Another significant contribution was from “Deadpool and Wolverine”, which earned $1.388 billion and became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, as well as “Moana 2,” which is still playing in theaters and currently stands at $719 million.
Overall, at least five of the year’s most anticipated releases belonged to Disney — in addition to the aforementioned, it’s worth adding to the list the films “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” ($398 million) and “Alien: Romulus” ($351 million). Although with the latest premiere, the animated film “Mufasa”, it seems something went awry.
This achievement is especially impressive against last year, which did not bring Disney any “billion-dollar films” (there were 7 in 2019) and was remembered solely for failing “Marvels” and “Wish.”
