The cost of producing two seasons of the series “Andor” reached $645 million — $290 million went into filming the second season alone last year, but the final sum could be substantially higher.
Indeed, “Andor” has surpassed “The Last Jedi” and has become the most expensive project in the “Star Wars” universe. If you consider TV spending in general, the costliest is still “The Rings of Power” from Prime Video with a budget of $465 million for its first season.
Filming for the second season of “Andor” started in November 2022, but was paused in the summer due to a strike by actors and writers. Production resumed in January 2023, with post-production, where VFX was added to the filmed footage, taking about another year. This could increase the final cost of the second season to a whopping $350 million, according to estimates by Forbes (via World of Reel).
The action of “Andor” unfolds five years before the events of the original “Star Wars” (1977) and narrates the story of Diego Luna’s character—a spy working for the rebels trying to overthrow the Empire led by Darth Vader. Essentially, it is one of a limited number of successful series in the “Star Wars” universe from Disney after acquiring Lucasfilm in 2012. On the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, the first season scored 87%—the highest rating for Star Wars series released on Disney+.
The premiere of the second season of “Andor” is scheduled for April 2025.
