«For the defense of freedom of speech»: Elon Musk nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Elon Musk’s activities have provoked a controversial reaction from members of the European Parliament: some accuse the billionaire of undermining democracy and call on the EU Commission to impose sanctions on him, while others —have nominated him for the Nobel Prize.

For the first time about this reported some media outlets, and later the information was confirmed by the MEP himself:

«Yes, the proposal to nominate Elon Musk for the Nobel Peace Prize for his consistent position on the protection of freedom of speech has been successfully submitted. Sincere thanks to everyone who contributed!», — wrote Member of the European Parliament and Slovenian politician Branko Grims on Facebook.

Unfortunately, there is no way to check whether Musk is on the list of nominees. The official website of the award states that nominations can be made public only 50 years after the award ceremony and therefore «this year’s data is a strictly guarded secret».

This is not the first time the billionaire has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, but in the context of recent events, the proposal looks particularly ironic. This month, Elon Musk made a strange gesture at Trump’s inauguration, in which a Nazi salute was seen, and before that he faced criticism for a live broadcast with the leader of a far-right German party and a call to vote for the AfD, which led to dozens of German universities left his social network en masse.

During the same conversation, Musk also said that «there is too much emphasis on past guilt and that children should not be held responsible for the actions of their parents», alluding to the horrific crimes of the Nazis in Germany during World War II — Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats and the country’s largest labor union criticized the billionaire’s statements, and Musk’s comments also affected Poland. The local minister even called on Poles to boycott Tesla and not buy the company’s cars

Earlier, the businessman, who calls himself the main champion of freedom of speech, also faced a massive outflow of advertisers due to problems with content moderation in X and the placement of company ads alongside anti-Semitic posts. And Musk himself is not above making strange statements that are hardly befitting a peace prize nominee: in 2022, he launched a poll on «peace between Ukraine and Russia», where, among other things offered to give up Crimea to the occupiersLater that week, Elon proposed to make Taiwan a special administrative region of China.
