Google has officially announced that it will replace Assistant with Gemini this year. The only exception will be devices with older versions of Android.
A little more than a year after its launch and significant feature updates, Gemini will replace Google Assistant, which has been available on Android phones since 2016. Ahead of the announcement, Google opened Gemini Deep Research to all users.
«We believe that an assistant should be personal to you and aware of the world around you. It should be able to interact with the apps and services you already use. It should make you more productive, creative, and interesting», — Google writes.
The usual Google Assistant will not be available on most mobile devices. This will happen «later this year», and users will receive a more precise date in advance. They will receive an update notification in the coming months. Phones running Android 9 or earlier that don’t have at least 2GB of RAM will continue to use Assistant.
«In the meantime, we continue to focus on making Gemini a better everyday experience, especially for those who have come to rely on Google Assistant. We’ve updated the app to support more of the most requested features, like playing music, setting timers, or performing actions from a locked screen».
Google has already replaces assistants on Samsung phones, Pixel, OnePlus and Motorola, launched last year, there Gemini has become the default assistant. The company says «million people have already made the switch to». When Gemini was launched in February 2024, it lacked many of the features of the phone assistant, and Google made the option to return to Assistant easily visible. Since then, the app has Gemini has received many new features.

Gemini will also be available for tablets, cars, and devices that interact with the phone — headphones, watches. Some home devices with Google Assistant will also be updated — speakers, displays, TVs.
