One of the largest Internet providers in Ukraine «Kyivstar» will build only GPON fiber networks, which are less dependent on electricity. The existing FTTB networks will be recycled.
The widespread FTTB broadband Internet connection, where optical fiber goes to the house and users receive the Internet via a regular network, requires power from a local switch. In the event of a power outage, the switches do not work without autonomous sources. During the auction for the distribution of frequencies between cellular operators, the CEO of «Kyivstar» said dev.ua, provider plans to get rid of this scheme in favor of a more energy-independent GPON.
«We have decided to invest in GPON and are building only GPON starting this year,» said Alexander Komarov.
This does not mean building only new GPON networks. «Kyivstar» will replace existing FTTB networks with fully fiber-optic ones, at least in large cities. According to the provider’s CEO, this process will take 12-18 months from now.
«We have the largest fixed network in the country, but it is built on FTTB technology. This is a great technology, it has no complaints, except for one thing — one extra socket compared to GPON».
GPON technology involves connecting the end user via fiber optic cable. The network distribution does not require power from a switch. GPON service is very popular in Ukraine due to power outages caused by Russian shelling of the power grid.
We can only hope that «Kyivstar» will modernize Internet access in small towns as well. The provider has a wide penetration across the country, and in some localities it is one of the few Internet providers.
