
Hans Zimmer’s score for «Dune 2» will not be eligible for this year’s «Oscar».
The reason: The Academy says it’s because of «exceeding the limit on originality» — the music allegedly borrowed more than 20% of the already released themes and contains «significant elements» from his work in the first «Dune».
«In the case of sequels and franchises, the score should not use more than 20% of existing themes and music borrowed from previous film scores», — the Academy rule states (via Variety).
Hans Zimmer — is one of the most famous composers in the world of cinema, having already won an Oscar» for his score to the animated film «The Lion King». In addition, he created the score for the first «Gladiator», as well as such films as «Rain Man», «Pirates of the Caribbean», «The Da Vinci Code», «Interstellar», and others. The German composer is also known for supporting Ukraine: in March 2022, Zimmer organized a tour of Europe with representatives of the Odesa Opera House Orchestrawho were helped by the artist’s team to leave Ukraine; and during the concert, he dedicated one of his compositions to women who serve in the Armed Forces.
Although Hans Zimmer’s score for «Dune 2» will not be eligible for the «Oscar», he may still win an award for his work for Steve McQueen’s upcoming World War II drama «Blitz». Whereas a composition from «Dune» may win at other awards such as the Critics Choice Awards, «Golden Globe», BAFTA and «Grammy».
