iOS 18.1 coming next week with Apple Intelligence and AirPods Pro for hearing testing and improvement

The new version of Apple’s mobile operating system iOS 18.1 will be released next week. It will bring several new features, the main ones being Apple Intelligence and support for AirPods Pro 2 as hearing aids.

Let’s start with hearing aids. Since the end of 2022, companies in the United States have been allowed to sell hearing aids over the counter. Apple announced the new feature at a September event, and the FDA approved it for use just a few days later. It includes a test that lets people know if they might be at risk of hearing loss. If the test reveals hearing loss, the software will recommend a professional evaluation.

The new feature will also allow users to set up their AirPods Pro as hearing aids. In this case, the device will amplify sounds and allow users to set dynamic settings in real time. Unlike hearing aids, however, wearing AirPods while talking to someone may make it look like you’re not engaging with the person or ignoring them. The upgrade can also make a big difference in the affordability of hearing care for people with hearing loss. Hearing aids can cost thousands of dollars, while the AirPods Pro 2 cost $249.

Apple Intelligence artificial intelligence features will become a more prominent innovation in iOS 18.1. The company first unveiled its view of AI at the WWDC in June. Apple Intelligence offers a number of initial features, including intelligent audio recording and transcription for apps such as Mail, Notes, and Pages. The AI also has writing tools for things like spelling and grammar checking. Apple should release more features for its AI tool in future updates.
