It turns out that actress Caitlin Deaver, who took on the role of Abby in the second season of «The Last of Us, is a longtime fan of the series of post-apocalyptic Naughty Dog games that formed the basis of the series.
«It was a moment of real connection for me and my dad», — says Deaver (via Games Radar). «And returning to this after more than 10 years looked somehow surreal».
The actress notes that this long-standing passion added to her anxiety during the casting and subsequently on the set, but showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann provided the necessary support.
«I was very nervous when I got to the set, as I had been a fan of the games for a long time, and later of the series. But this great team supported me. Craig and Neil took care of me like no one else before,» says the actress.

To recap not everyone appreciated Deaver’s choice for the role of Abbyin particular because the actress’s physique differs significantly from the image envisioned in The Last of Us Part II. Caitlin also faced additional problems due to the hate towards the character, which caused her to Hired security for the duration of the filming.
«We need someone who can really capture the essence of these characters… So we don’t focus so much on whether the actors look like the character with their eyebrows, nose or body», — said Druckmann in previous interviews. «We would have had a hard time finding someone as good as Caitlin for the role. In games, this is important because we need the characters to play differently, so that Ellie feels smaller and Abby is rougher and more like Joel. In the new version of the story, the difference doesn’t play a big role. It’s more about the drama».
Interestingly, Deaver is extremely similar to Ellie in The Last of Us games, so when the idea of a film adaptation came up in the 2010s, it was her fans who were promoting the role. The actress also played the role of Nathan Drake’s daughter in the epilogue of Naughty Dog Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
The first season of the series «The Last of Us» can be considered successful for game adaptations in general, as it regularly broke records during the viewsand also received 24 Emmy nominations «Emmy». The second one will take place five years later and, as the showrunners noted, will cover some of the events of The Last of Us Part II, while the full story will take «two or more seasons».
Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsay (Ellie) will reprise their roles, while newcomers include Isabela Merced (Dina), Young Masino (Jesse), and Jeffrey Wright (Isaac), who will reprise his role on TV. The second season will debut on HBO and Max on April 13 (with Ukrainian dubbing, it is officially available on Megogo) — new episodes will be released every Sunday.
