The Nintendo Switch surpassed the PlayStation 2 in the US market, where 53 million PS2s were sold. However, on the global market, PS2 remains the most successful console of all time with 160 million units sold.
It is worth noting that the Nintendo DS handheld console reached an even higher figure in the United States with 57 million units sold. However, it is the Switch, due to its hybrid nature, that can be directly compared to the PS2.
Globally, Nintendo Switch has sold 146 million units. Given the slowdown in sales over the past year and the expected announcement of Switch 2, it is unlikely that the original model will be able to surpass the PS2’s global record.
Nintendo’s history shows significant fluctuations in success: from the triumph of the Nintendo Entertainment System (61.91 million) and Super Nintendo (49.1 million) to the less successful Nintendo 64 (32 million) and GameCube (21.74 million). The Wii returned the company to success with over 100 million consoles sold, but the subsequent Wii U sold only 13.5 million copies.
