«Nosferatu» earned $40 million in 5 days of release «at home» — record for Robert Eggers’ films

“Nosferatu” scored Robert Eggers’ best debut among his films, raking in $40 million in just 5 days in North America — which, by the way, is about 50% of the total box office of “The Northman,” another popular flick by the director.

“Nosferatu” — this is another remake of the eponymous silent film from the 1920s, telling the story of a young woman and the vampire who falls in love with her. Bill Skarsgård stars as Count Orlok, Nicholas Hoult plays Thomas Hutter, and Lily-Rose Depp — his wife Ellis. Also among the cast: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe (who, by the way, himself played Count Orlok and actor Max Schreck in the 2000 film “Shadow of the Vampire,” which was touted as “a loose reinterpretation of the shooting of the original ‘Nosferatu'”).

According to Variety, the production budget for “Nosferatu” was $50 million, and the debut has already surpassed previous expert box office forecasts. The film also received quite decent reviews, with some critiques naming it a contender for “one of the best films of the year.”

“Despite a familiar plot, Eggers’ version suffocates like a coffin, right up to the terrifying final frame. Lily-Rose Depp fully commits to her role, while Bill Skarsgård’s monster showcases terrifying fury,” — wrote Empire in its reviewEmpire.

In Ukrainian cinemas, “Nosferatu” launches on January 2nd.

As for other box office achievements, Disney’s “Mufasa” seems to be bouncing back after a shaky start: in two weeks, the animated film with an approximate budget of $250 million has earned $315 million, greatly aided by the holiday weekend (for comparison, “The Lion King” 2019 earned $440 million in just one weekend). It’s worth noting that even without counting the latest release Disney has had an extraordinarily productive and rich year: for example, “Moana 2” currently has $882.5 million in global earnings and is poised to hit $1 billion in the new year, repeating the successes of “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool and Wolverine.”

The biopic “A Complete Unknown” starring Timothée Chalamet also opened better than forecasts — $23.2 million in 5 days of domestic screenings and the second highest debut for Searchlight. “Sonic 3” has so far earned $211 million worldwide, outperforming its predecessors from 2020 and 2022.
