The sequel to «Joker», with its unsuccessful box office performance and desire to resemble a musical, did not impress critics and caused a lot of ridicule on social media, but director Quentin Tarantino has a radically different opinion about the project.
«I really, really liked it. I went hoping to be impressed by the production. However, I had enough nihilism to enjoy a movie that doesn’t work like a movie», — says the director.
Tarantino added that the movie does look like «a giant mess», but in his opinion, this product should not be taken as an intellectual exercise», it is better to enjoy the music instead:
«I really liked the musical fragments. I really got into it. The more banal the songs, the better they are».
The director also compared Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) and Harleen Quinzel (Lady Gaga) to Mickey and Mallory (a pair of serial killers from his own film «Natural Born Killers»):
«As much as the first movie was indebted to Taxi Driver, the second movie was inspired by Natural Born Killers. I liked what they did with them. I liked the direction. The whole movie was Mickey Knox’s wet dream».
Other than that, Quentin liked the «comedy scenes» that he could laugh at in the «almost empty IMAX theater without disturbing the other viewers»:
«I know that I laugh at scenes that other people would not laugh at».
Tarantino also praised the direction of Todd Phillips, who made the «movie look like it was directed by the Joker» himself, and the acting of Joaquin Phoenix, who gave «one of the best performances» the director has ever seen in his life.
«The Joker 2» is already being broadcast «in digital», having previously grossed $201 million in theaters worldwide (one million more than the production budget). On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie’s score is currently dropped to 32% (and both the critics and the audience were unanimous in this regard).
