Snapdragon 8 Elite «on a» diet: Qualcomm releases a stripped-down version of its flagship chip

The Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset was officially introduced last October as a powerful 8-core processor for flagship mobile devices. But now another version of Snapdragon 8 Elite with partially changed characteristics has appeared. It was discovered on the Qualcomm website.

The new version of the chip has only 7 computing cores: 2 Prime cores with a clock speed of up to 4.32 GHz and 5 Performance cores with a clock speed of up to 3.53 GHz. In fact, one Performance core is missing compared to the regular Snapdragon 8 Elite.

This 7-core Snapdragon 8 Elite processor is labeled SM8750-3-AB. It can be used by OEMs who want it, presumably to save some money compared to the 8-core CPU version. It can be assumed that these are sorted processors – that is, they are all manufactured in the same way, but those chips that have problems with one Performance core are simply shipped with the core disabled. This allows you to use chips that would have previously been considered defective products.

Now it’s time to wait for the release of mobile devices with this stripped-down Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and check them in benchmarks to find out how disabling one core will affect overall performance. It will also be interesting to see if manufacturers will somehow explicitly indicate the use of 7-core versions of the processor in their devices.
