The first details about Volkswagen ID.ONE – a city electric car for €20 thousand.

Volkswagen plans to make electric cars more accessible to everyone. The company has revealed new details about its budget model, which is likely to be called ID.ONE and will enter the market in 2027. The expected price is about €20 thousand, which will make this electric car one of the most affordable in its class.

Volkswagen showed design sketches of the ID.ONE developed by the company’s chief designer Andreas Mindt. According to them, the car will be a compact five-door city hatchback with a modern design. The car has a relief front end with distinctive LED headlights built into a black grille and something similar to the illuminated VW logo.

Its profile is emphasized by large alloy wheels and pronounced fenders, while the rear boasts a classic city car design with a glass trunk door. According to Mindt, the overall design evokes a sense of «bold confidence and» timeless simplicity, combining functionality and style.

It is clear that the production version will look simpler: smaller wheels, a narrower body, and more ground clearance. But Volkswagen promises to keep the wide wheel arches, which will give the car a sporty look.

The ID.ONE will be built on the shortened MEB platform, which is already used in the larger ID.2. The same platform is likely to be used by Skoda and Seat’s budget electric cars, which will help reduce production costs.

The ID.ONE will have one electric motor and a small battery to remain affordable. This will not be a critical drawback when using the car in the city. The technical specifications have not yet been disclosed, but it is clear that the car will be designed for those who want to switch to electric traction without high costs.

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schaefer called this electric vehicle «an affordable, high-quality, profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe». Despite moving some production to Mexico, Schaefer confirmed that the Wolfsburg plant in Germany will remain central to Volkswagen’s electric future. This plant will be responsible for the production of the next generations of Golf and T-Roc electric vehicles built on the new SSP platform.

ID.ONE is just one of nine new models that Volkswagen plans to introduce in Europe by 2027. The company has an ambitious goal of becoming the world leader in electric vehicle production by 2030 while reducing costs.

As a reminder, Volkswagen has recently promised to redesign its electric vehicles, use better batteries and materials in them, and bring back physical control buttons.
