The upcoming movie in the «Hunger Games» franchise will be based on a new book by Suzanne Collins called «Sunrise on the Reaping.
Currently, the author is still working on the novel, which is a prequel to «The Hunger Games», but has released an official synopsis that announces the «deadliest» competition in the series and a tragic love story. The plot centers on Haymitch Abernathy (Katniss and Peeta’s mentor in the original trilogy) and his participation in the 50th Panem survival competition.
The title of the upcoming book — «Sunrise on the Reaping» / Sunrise on the Reaping — is a reference to the name of the day of the selection ceremony during which the young people who will represent the Districts in the competition are named. The 50th anniversary of the «Hunger Games» falls on the so-called «Quarter Quell», which changes the rules of the competition every 25 years and requires two participants per district.
«Catching Fire: Mockingjay takes us back to the world of Panem — 24 years before the events of the Hunger Games. As the day of the 50th annual competition approaches, the Districts are gripped by fear, as this year “twice as much tribute” will be taken from their homes», — the synopsis says.
Haymitch is not too concerned about his chances of becoming one of the victims, and instead focuses on his love.
«When Haymitch’s name is called, all his dreams are shattered. He is torn from his family and love, and sent to the Capitol with three other members of District 12: a friend who is almost like a sister, an obsessive eccentric, and the bravest girl in the neighborhood. When the Games begin, Gaimitch realizes that he is set up for defeat, but something inside him makes him fight… and in a way that will be known far beyond the deadly arena».
According to Variety, Francis Lawrence, who directed all parts of «The Hunger Games» is in talks about directing. While the actor who will play the main role has not yet been announced, Woody Harrelson played the lead in all three Gatematch films.
Collins’s book is due out in 2025, while the film adaptation is tentatively scheduled to premiere in theaters on November 20, 2026.
The «The Hunger Games» movie franchise has grossed more than $3.3 billion at the global box office, and the «The Hunger Games: Catching Fire» in 2013 became the highest-grossing film in the series with $865 million. The first prequel, «A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes», was released last year, showed more modest resultsHowever, given the $100 million budget, it still made a profit for Lionsgate, prompting the studio to think about another story.
