The movie «Star Wars» by James Mangold will take place 25,000 years before «The Phantom Menace»

Director James Mangold in an interview with MovieWeb provided several interesting details about his upcoming “Star Wars” film, announced back in April 2023.

Among other things, he outlined the time boundaries of the film, noting that the events will take place 25,000 years before “The Phantom Menace” (1999 year):

“This is a territory I’ve always wanted to explore, and which inspired me in my teenage years”.

Last year Mangold said that his project would focus on “the origins of the Force and how it was understood and used” with an atmosphere akin to biblical epics like “The Ten Commandments”. He also mentioned that he does not want to be “confined by canons” and aims to create something new:

“For me, a really important aspect of the work is the freedom to create something new”.

Lucasfilm has still not provided any updates regarding Mangold’s film, other than that he himself will be directing the process, and the screenplay will be written by Beau Willimon (“Andor”). This year, the director released a biopic about Bob Dylan and is considered one of the main contenders for the “Oscar”; overall, Mangold is well versed in working on major Hollywood franchises, having previously worked on such films as “The Wolverine”, “Logan”, and “Indiana Jones”.

Mangold’s upcoming film will be titled “Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi”, and active work on it is likely to start later this year. Currently, this is the only film project in the universe that has a more-or-less bright future — rumors recently suggest that Lucasfilm parted ways with the screenwriter of the project “Star Wars: The New Order of the Jedi” Steven Knight due to differences, after replacing him with Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”) and Justin Britt-Gibson (“The Other Side”). There were also rumors about replacing Charmaine Obaid-Chinoy as director, but no confirmations regarding this have yet been provided.
