Brothers Anthony and Joe Russo directed the last two “Avengers” for Marvel, but did not want to shoot “Avengers: Secret Wars” with Robert Downey Jr. without an interesting story, which they eventually found.
“Actually, what happened was that we stumbled upon an idea that activated us. You can’t notice it coming until it appears, and once it does, it’s like: ‘Well, this is the story we need to tell,'” said Anthony Russo for Empire.
In the Russo brothers’ achievements are films such as “Captain America: Civil War”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, and “Avengers: Endgame”. They will also be directing “Avengers: Judgment Day” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. The scripts will again be written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Robert Downey Jr. will return to Marvel films as Doctor Doom, a well-known enemy of The Fantastic Four from the comics.
“There were ideas that we tried to think through, which preceded this one, but we never found the story. I remember calling Steve [McFeely] and saying, ‘Hey, crazy idea. What do you think if we all go back and do “Secret Wars”?’ He replied: ‘Fuck no. Absolutely not.’ Then he hung up, and the next morning at 7:30 AM he called and said, ‘Okay, I have an idea,'” Joe Russo recounted.
What idea occurred to the brothers, they do not say. No wonder. The film “Avengers: Secret Wars” is set to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027.
