The second season of the series “Squid Game” is confidently making its way to becoming the most popular on the platform.
According to Deadline, “Squid Game 2” garnered 126.2 million views in 11 days — it is currently the fourth most streamed season on Netflix, trailing behind the first season, as well as “Wednesday” and “Stranger Things 4”. Additionally, the speed with which it reached these numbers is record-breaking for the platform, and it would hardly surprise anyone if the second season soon takes the top spot in viewership.
The first season also benefited from the release of the sequel, taking second place among non-English series broadcasts — with 13.6 million views in a week. This is a significant achievement, as previous seasons, although returning to the top-10 in views with new releases, rarely take second place.
We remind you that the second season follows the winner of the previous contests, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who returns to the deadly arena to save new participants and confront the game’s organizers to end the game forever. Along with Jae, Lee Byung-hun (the frontman of the game), Wi Ha-joon (a young police officer who was looking for his brother), and Gong Yoo (recruiter of new players) reprised their roles in the sequel.
Despite the great popularity of the second season, the reviews are not as good as it might have seemed initially: on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, the audience rating halted at a 63% mark. As we noted earlier, the sequel is mostly criticized for the lack of enough games, limiting the season to seven episodes, the appearance of a transgender participant, and an open ending. Interestingly, the idea of a cliffhanger was initially not appreciated by the lead actor, who expected that viewers would curse the creators for it.
We remind you that the third season was filmed simultaneously with the second and is set to debut on Netflix in the summer or fall of 2025. Previously, one of the foreign divisions of the streaming service accidentally released the exact date — June 27 — however, it has not received official confirmation.
