The trailer for “28 Years Later,” released last week, racked up a whopping 60 million views in just 24 hours — setting the record for 2024 and claiming the second spot for all-time horror movie trailers.
As Deadline reports, it outperformed the debut trailers of “The Nun” (55.4 million views), “The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It” (55.2 million), as well as this year’s “Smile 2” (33.1 million) and “Nosferatu” (26.4 million), although it gathered almost half as much as “It Chapter Two” (96 million).
So far, the trailer for “28 Years Later” has amassed 146.1 million views across multiple platforms. This fan frenzy has already prompted Sony to re-release the original film featuring Cillian Murphy in digital format.
“28 Years Later” is a sequel to the films “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later,” set two decades after a zombie onslaught in Great Britain. The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer, but rumors suggest we can expect a cameo by Jim, played by Cillian Murphy (and he didn’t turn into a zombie, as you might have thought at first glance of the trailer — the infected role was played by a lookalike actor).
The original team also returned for the sequel — director Danny Boyle, screenwriter Alex Garland, and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (incidentally, the film was reportedly mostly shot on an iPhone 15 Pro Max).
“28 Years Later” was filmed simultaneously with its second part — directed by Nia DaCosta, where Murphy is set to take the lead role. The first is set to debut in theaters on June 20th.
