CD Projekt Red has lifted the veil on the behind-the-scenes process of creating The Witcher 4 trailer. The difference between the behavior of Ciri the Witcher and Geralt became known.
After the announcement of the sequel to the cult saga The Witcher on The Game Awards 2024 the studio released a 10-minute backstage. In it, CDPR told us how the movie was created and what it means for the story of the future heroine Tsiri.
The cinematic trailer was developed together with Platige Image, which created all the trailers for The Witcher 3. It features Ciri appears at the sacrifice ceremony of the so-called «god». Officially, there is no trailer in Ukrainian dubbing, but it was released by enthusiasts.
The studio used real cameras and lenses for the effect of watching a movie. Professional stuntmen played the battle between Ciri and the monster. In addition, the animation combined motion capture with the hand work of animators. A «god», as he was nicknamed by the villagers, became a unique monster in the series of games.
From the very beginning, the developers realized that Tsiri would be the main character of the new installment. The game’s director Sebastian Kalemba says that it was «just natural for them, and we believe that Ciri deserves». But the young witch will not repeat Geralt’s behavior, so the trailer showed a key difference.
«(Ciri’s actions, — ed.) different than what Geralt would do. She lives through these emotions she’s connected with herself», says film director Kayetan Kapuscinski.
The main difference is shown in the scene where she reacts to the death of Mioni (the girl who is sacrificed). Most likely, Geralt would have remained cold-blooded and rational, but Ciri relies on her feelings. The developers have shown Tsiri and Mioni as mirror images, which is revealed in a monologue by the girl’s father, Givan. At the beginning of the trailer, he describes the fate of his daughter «in a way that Geralt could have said that about Ciri as well»
«She grow from a devilishly curious child into a remarkable young lass with much grace, wisdom, and kindness», — adds director Phillip Weber.
CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the game is at an early stage of development, but it is expected that will surpass the scale of Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. The studio has learned to based on the Cyberpunk experience, so it will give you the freedom to create a build but will avoid its mistakes. The favorite of the series Geralt won’t just be resting in Toussaint, so «old wolf» will delight fans with its appearance.
