Trailer The Last of Us — first look at Abby in season two and official release date

The showrunner of “The Last of Us” Neil Druckmann at CES 2025 showcased a new trailer for the second season and confirmed the release date — the show will return to HBO and Max in April 2025 (but without specific dates).

In the brief one-minute teaser, we were shown several new vivid scenes featuring Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Joel (Pedro Pascal), as well as a new character Abby (Caitlin Dever), who plays one of the key roles in the sequel.

Initially, game enthusiasts negatively received the choice of Dever for the role, as her physique somewhat differs from the image envisioned in the plot of The Last of Us Part II (moreover, the actress had to hire security due to the hate towards the character). Interestingly, Caitlin is remarkably similar to Ellie in the games The Last of Us, and it was her fans who promoted her for the leading role when the idea of adaptation emerged in the 2010s. The actress also played Nathan Drake’s daughter in the epilogue of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

The first season of “The Last of Us” was generally successful as a game adaptation, and regularly broke viewing records. The show also received 24 Emmy nominations, where it won 8 trophies.

According to last year’s interview with the showrunners, the second season will cover “part of the second game,” while “two or more seasons” will be needed for the full story.

“We don’t think we can tell the story within two seasons (second and third), so we are not rushing and are taking interesting paths,” said showrunner Craig Mazin.

In addition to Abby, the continuation will feature characters such as Dina (Isabela Merced), Jesse (Yang Mazino) and Isaac (his role from the games will be reprised on TV by Jeffrey Wright). Also, in an undisclosed role in the series will appear “Home Alone” star Catherine O’Hara.

Earlier, HBO announced a new team of directors that joined the second season of “The Last of Us” — led by Mark Mylod, who worked on “Succession” and “Game of Thrones”.
