Ukraine possesses a modern laser weapon called «Trident», capable of destroying aircraft at a distance of more than 2 kilometers. This was announced by Colonel Vadym Sukharevskyi, Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
«We can state that today Ukraine is, if I’m not mistaken, the fifth country that can say that it has a laser. Today, we can shoot down aircraft at an altitude of more than 2 km with this laser,” said the commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to Sukharevsky, work is currently underway to improve and scale the laser weapon. He added that this is a real working system, not a concept.
«It really works, it really is»,” Vadym Sukharevsky emphasized.
He did not delve into the technical characteristics and capabilities of the «Trident» laser weapon.
To recap, earlier was reportedreported that Ukraine may receive DragonFire laser weapons from the UK, which can shoot down UAVs at a cost of less than UAH 500 per shot.
The DragonFire system is a promising laser weapon of directed action. It works by focusing 37 channels of 1.5 kW laser beams arranged in a hexagonal shape and combining them with mirrors to merge and amplify power. Tim Kendall, a senior laser physicist at the UK’s Porton Down Defense Laboratory (DSTL), who helped create DragonFire, said it creates a «perfect laser beam» that can be fired through a telescopic lens. This weapon is silent and invisible because the wavelength of the light is about one micron, which is not visible to the human eye and is close to the infrared spectrum of light.
The colonel also reported on the successful development of the «uterus» attack drone program. These are carriers that can cover long distances and carry attack drones.
«We are now using so-called «uterus drones», FPV carriers, with a depth of penetration of more than 70 km. They carry 2 FPVs underneath and actually act as a repeater and hit deep enemy targets. As for me, this is a real breakthrough,” said the colonel.
He added that scaling this project is one of the key tasks.
