Mercedes-Benz CLA is no longer a cake: the car will get a Geely engine and Chinese intelligent control technologies

The upcoming third-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA will be powered by a 2.0T four-cylinder engine produced by Geely and Horse. The latter, officially known as Horse Powertrain Limited, was established on May 31, 2024 as a company owned by Geely and Renault in a 50:50 ratio.

The declared engine power is 250 horsepower (186 kW), and the maximum torque is 360 Nm. Previous reports indicated that the internal combustion engine to be used in the CLA was designed and developed in partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Geely. It should be noted that Geely, through its CEO Li Shufu, owns a stake of about 10% in Mercedes-Benz and also has a joint venture with the electric vehicle company Smart.

Although the engine is manufactured in China, the catalytic converter will be installed in Germany to meet strict emission standards. Earlier it was reported that the engine will be part of a 48-volt mild hybrid system, using a gearbox-mounted integrated starter.

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA will be based on the MMA architecture and will feature a mild hybrid and all-electric powertrains. Reports suggest that there will be no plug-in hybrid option.

It should be noted that the Geely engine will not be the only Chinese technology used in the CLA. The car will also have a high-level intelligent driving system from Chinese startup Momenta. This will mean that the CLA will be the first Mercedes-Benz to feature city driving assistance. Momenta was founded in 2016, and Mercedes-Benz became the company’s first investor in a Series B funding round in 2017.

The all-electric versions of the CLA are expected to have a 175 kW electric motor mounted at the rear and an 89.6 kWh battery pack, which will provide a range of up to 750 km (WLTC). Consequently, energy consumption will be only 12 kWh per 100 km. The MMA platform will have an 800 V architecture and will be able to increase the range by 400 km after 15 minutes of charging.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA is expected to make its debut in 2025, although the mild hybrid version may not go on sale until 2026.
