Microsoft Office users have experienced program malfunctions on systems running Windows 11 24H2 and using CrowdStrike antivirus. Both of these solutions have caused global outages in the past. Therefore, it is currently unknown which one is responsible for the new problem.

This unpleasant situation concerns Office applications such as Word and Excel, which become completely unusable after upgrading to Windows 11 24H2. This only happens on systems running CrowdStrike antivirus. Yes, this is the same CrowdStrike that caused global IT problems in July. However, the Windows 11 24H2 update has already also brought network connectivity problems, «blue screens of death» and failed patches that cannot be installed.

The problem occurs with the CrowdStrike Falcon antivirus, which has several advanced cybersecurity mechanisms. The issue with Windows 11 24H2 occurs if Enhanced Exploitation Visibility Prevention Policy is enabled in the Host Protection Policy settings.

It is not yet known whether this applies to other antivirus programs. At this time, the issue has only been seen on devices that have been updated to Windows 11 24H2 and are protected by a CrowdStrike solution.

Microsoft has added such devices to the list of those blocked from receiving the Windows 11 24H2 update and has also said it is working with CrowdStrike to resolve the issue. In the meantime, CrowdStrike temporarily disabled the Enhanced Exploitation Visibility Prevention Policy setting for users affected by the issue. This helped to partially resolve the situation until a full fix is released.
