A survey by tech trading site SellCell (via 9to5mac) showed that most smartphone owners consider artificial intelligence features when buying devices, but are not satisfied with what companies currently offer.

At least half of iPhone owners (47.6%) stated that AI features are an important or decisive factor in buying a new phone—compared to 23.7% of Samsung users who said the same.

73% of iPhone owners surveyed are dissatisfied with the current Apple Intelligence features, while 87% of Galaxy AI users stated that AI features “add no value” to their smartphone experience.

The report also provided a popularity rating of various Apple Intelligence features available before the launch of iOS 18.2 (possibly Genmoji and ChatGPT will change this distribution later):

  • Writing tools (72%)
  • Message summaries (54%)
  • Priority messages (44.5%)
  • Object removal in photos (29.1%)
  • Quick replies in mail and messages (20.9%)

Meanwhile, 16.8% of iPhone owners stated they would consider switching to Samsung if the company offered better AI features, while at least 9.7% of Samsung device users agreed to the reverse switch.

Apple customers (11.6%) are more likely to purchase subscriptions for AI services than Samsung users (4%). However, the vast majority of smartphone owners (86.5% Apple and 94.5% Samsung) stated they are not planning to pay for AI features.

The issues most frequently impeding iPhone owners from appreciating the technology are the absence of software updates to the latest version (57.6%), uselessness (36.7%), and inaccuracy (18.2%). Samsung users added to this list concerns about privacy and security (30.1%).

The survey involved more than 2000 smartphone users, including over 1000 iPhone owners with AI-supporting models (iPhone 16, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max), and over 1000 Samsung Galaxy smartphone owners with AI-supporting models (Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy S23, Galaxy S22, Galaxy Z Fold6, Galaxy Z Fold5, Galaxy Z Fold4, Galaxy Z Flip6, Galaxy Z Flip5, and Galaxy Z Flip4), aged 18 years and older, residing in the USA.
