According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is working on a smart doorbell that would connect to a similarly smart lock and unlock it using a camera and face scanning system, famously known to iPhone users as Face ID.
Like other Apple devices, the doorbell will be equipped with the Secure Enclave chip, which stores and processes Face ID information separately from the rest of the system’s hardware.
Gurman writes that the device will “likely” work with existing HomeKit smart locks or Apple might choose a single supplier to offer a “complete system on day one.”
The doorbell is expected to be equipped with its own Apple Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip codenamed “Proxima,” which, as rumored, will be available for new HomePod Mini and Apple TV devices starting next year. The device’s release is also planned for the end of 2025.
Rumored further Apple smart home plans include a security camera, a television, and new smart displays: one simple device similar to an iPad that would be mounted on a wall, and another that will be attached to a robotic arm.
