Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is coming out on December 9 on PC and Xbox Series X/S, with a PlayStation 5 version to follow later.
MachineGames has created an action-adventure game that not only recreates the spirit of the original films but also offers an exciting new story. According to the aggregator Metacriticthe game received 87 points out of 100 based on 44 reviews. On Opencritic 92% of critics recommend the game, and the average score is 86 points.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is set in 1937, between the events of «Raiders of the Lost Ark» (1981) and «The Last Crusade» (1989). The legendary archaeologist confronts intruders hunting for a mysterious power associated with the Great Circle — mysterious locations around the world that form a perfect circle on a map.
«We smiled from the beginning to the end of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. It’s as close as video games can get to a real old-fashioned Hollywood blockbuster», writes VCG and gave the game a score of 100 points.
GameSpot (90/100) notes: «Indiana Jones and The Great Circle — is the quintessential Indiana Jones game. It captures the look, sound, and spirit of the films, presenting an engaging story with an unexpected emphasis on stealth and free exploration».
«Like Dr. Jones himself, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a bit out of time. It’s a strange combination of modern cinematic game elements with an adventurous spirit», notes ScreenRant.
«The Great Circle resembles a mix of immersive action and Uncharted. The game joins Batman Arkham and GoldenEye in the list of the best games based on popular franchises», — writes PCGamer (86/100).
Advantages of the game:
- Amazing ray tracing graphics
- Fascinating puzzles
- One of the best stories in the series
- Excellent work by Troy Baker as Indiana Jones
- Fidelity to the tone and style of the original films
- Level design encourages exploration
- High-quality voice acting and soundtrack
Cons of the game:
- Mediocre combat system
- Weak stealth mechanics
- Excessive number of QTE scenes and cutscenes
- Some technical shortcomings
- Not the most advanced movement mechanics
«Although the combat system and stealth are not impressive, the overall execution of the game is of such a high level that fans will enjoy the adventures of Indiana Jones», — notes GameRant with a score of 80 points.
Reviewers from HardcoreGamer gave the game 80 points out of 100 and noted that despite «a lack of technical innovation» and «an imperfect combat system», The Great Circle was one of the most exciting games of the year. In their opinion, the «game is a more successful continuation of the Indiana Jones franchise than the latest» films.
Players will be able to visit real locations, including Peru, Connecticut, the Vatican, Thailand, Egypt, Shanghai, and the Himalayas. The development was led by Jörk Gustafsson, and the music was composed by Gordy Haab, who reinterpreted the classic themes of John Williams. Todd Howard from Bethesda Game Studios created the game’s story and acted as an executive producer.
