Following the announcement Descent G2 dive computer, Garmin introduced a new version of Tactix — a smartwatch that uses the Fenix functionality as a basis, but is enhanced with «tactical» capabilities.
The Garmin Tactix 8 features a 1.4-inch AMOLED display, dual-position GPS, a titanium bezel and sapphire lens, and supports a number of tactical features: such as stealth mode; a mode that allows the display to be read with night vision; a one-touch data wipe; and Applied Ballistics Ultralight Solver — a simplified version of the ballistic calculator for high-precision shooting at long distances.
Among other things, the Tactix 8 supports all the key functions of a smartwatch, including sleep and energy monitoring, heart rate, respiration rate, stress and skin temperature, and activity tracking. The watch also has a built-in multi-color LED flashlight to help you navigate in low light conditions, a 40-meter submersion rating, support for Garmin Pay contactless payments, and has been tested to meet U.S. military standards for heat, shock, and water resistance.
The declared battery life in smartwatch mode is up to 30 days (48 days with a solar panel), GPS only is up to 95 hours (149 hours with a solar panel).
The Garmin Tactix 8 is available in two sizes with prices of $1299 for the 47mm AMOLED version and $1399 for the 51mm version («solar» version costs the same); additionally, a 55mm version with a solar screen and an advanced ballistic calculator Applied Ballistics Elite Solver is available for $1599. Pre-orders start on February 21.
