Gravehawk: UK gives Ukraine a new air defense system capable of using Ukrainian missiles

During his visit to Ukraine, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the transfer of new weapons to Ukraine that will allow it to more effectively repel the Russian invasion. It includes 150 British-made artillery pieces and new Gravehawk mobile air defense systems.

«I am delighted to announce today that we are providing 150 artillery barrels, which… have been manufactured in the United Kingdom and will be delivered to Ukraine in just a few weeks. We will also be supplying a new mobile air defense system called the Gravehawk, which is co-financed with Denmark,» said Keir Starmer.

A feature of the Gravehawk air defense system is the ability to modify «air-to-air missiles» for ground-based air defense. At the same time, the system is capable of «using Ukrainian missiles that are already in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine». The system itself is comparable in size to a sea shipping container.

The Gravehawk air defense project was developed specifically for Ukraine. The production was jointly funded by the UK and Denmark. The first two prototypes were successfully tested in September last year. Now Ukraine is to receive 15 new systems, which are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2025.

Defense Express portal suggestsThe Ukrainian missile that can be used by the Gravehawk system is the R-73 missile. This is a short-range «air-to-air» guided missile with an infrared homing system. It is used in the «Wasp» anti-aircraft missile system, as well as on MAGURA V5 maritime drones, which have recently for the first time in history, Russian helicopters were shot down near the coast of the temporarily occupied Crimea. It is likely that the SupaCat chassis-based SAMs that were previously used in the tests are Gravehawks.
